My Logo Looks “ILL” on Facebook

My Logo Looks “ILL” on Facebook

You’ve all seen it – the horizontal logo that gets cropped midsection by Facebook.  My logo became this:

“ILL” does not exactly work for me.

I needed to design a square logo for the social media tools that offered a square box.  The great news is the name “Gillis Marketing” is often to the right of the square – so I stayed with a consistent look in my design.  The result:

At this point, many Facebook users are accustomed to the auto-crop look.  But why settle?  I have found that 184px x 184px does a great job.  If you offer white space around your existing logo – you will still be auto-cropped.  To solve this problem with a client, I placed her horizontal logo in a new 184px x 184px file.  Then, in a different layer – I filled the background with a color.  I saved that file as a jpg and it looks great in her Facebook Page updates. When creating a square “logo” for another client, Paul Williams Building & Remodeling, I used a photograph they provided when I worked on their website.  I cropped to 184px x 184px, placed the words “Williams” and it looks great:

Williams Construction South ShoreLinkedIn now offers you the ability to upload two logos to Company Profiles:

It would be great if Facebook offered this option in the future.  For the Gillis Marketing Facebook Page – I also uploaded my horizontal logo in the Photos Section.  My intention is as people check out the tabs on my Page – they would see the full logo.

Ask your logo designer to create a square version of your logo.  I understand there is an entire logo/brand philosophy supporting the consistency of one logo implementation at all times.  However, I believe you have greater consistency and control over your logo/brand if you consider you will need more than one format (horizontal, vertical, square) for readability.
